Poetry Consultant

A consultant told my wife’s nonprofit
they should work to work

themselves out of jobs, help so many
down-and-out families

there’s none left down or out—thank-
fully, white flight, apathy, and

blind affluence keep her job secure.
And poets much the same—

our barbaric yawps always finding
new rooftops over

the restless mob, our wet, black
poems always profiling

a new face in the crowd, the hooch
of our poems so distilled

that none in the endless parade
will perish unnoticed

and without a comforting shot of light-
ning by the back door.
