The Little I Know

The Little I Know

Never had no military men
in my family,

except maybe one—a great
grandfather

whose widow filed for gov’t
pension

based on Confederate
service.

But I know soldiers are trained
to run

toward the hollow lead, not
away. I know

too that Rev. Clementa Pinckney
charged his flock

to run toward diamond-hard grace,
not away, toward

the raw wound, not away, toward
the heart-

break, not away, toward the promise-
d land, not away,

toward the blind, hate-filled-
ful world, not

away. I saw with mine eyes
them love

a man whose name I cannot
say. I saw

them show us all
a way.
