Farewell
The Beach Poems, Day Ten

One of our children started it—
the random animal farewell—

by mistake. After the tuck
and prayer and kiss and closing

door, the parent descending
stairs said See you later

alligator
, and some little
one replied After while

giraffe
. So we shortened
the whole call-and-response

to arbitrary animal names—
hippopotamus/orangutan,

horse/pig, duckduck/goose
.
Our own private goodbye

game, till the door was
merely shut on empty rooms.
