Eyes, Aloft!

Eyes, Aloft!

I got the crazy
from my mom. She had visions
and heard voices.

She saved scores
of people from tragic accidents
just by seeing

them in her head
and taking it to the Lord.
We were close.

Of course, a lot
of people tried to kill her
too, which means

being a kid
was complicated—always
on the look-

out for her
moods. She was a spotter
for the Air-

craft Warning
Service in 1942. Sometimes
I imagine

her still
standing in a pitch-black
South Georgia

pencil, log, and silhouette

in hand.
She is meticulous, clear-
headed, keen,

for the inexorable enemy
to come.
